Biography
If you know music, you will KNOW the name MUDBONE COOPER. You will also know that this multi platinum selling artist in his own right is the person that some of the biggest names in the history of music turn to for inspiration, when they need that extra piece of magic that’s helped many of them sell vast quantities of records.
Where does one begin in describing a musical legacy that is second to none? Let’s start with the co-founding member and frontground vocalist of Bootsy’s Rubber Band, and co-author of the very song that got them signed to a major label and deal from jump start. "I’d Rather Be With You” happens to be that band’s biggest selling song ever, and one of the most sampled songs of all times. That one song alone has been sampled by the likes of Dr Dre, Beyoncé Knowles, Snoop Dogg, Sugababes, Adina Howard and countless others, proving itself to be not only a milestone in the history of funk, but also one of the cornerstones of hip hop.
Very few musical units can ever lay claim to inventing a musical genre, but through his work with the P-Funk empire, Mudbone has played on all the International Hits that made not only P-Funk the most significant band of their era, but also went on to inspire a whole generation during the birth of hip hop.
The fact that Mudbone’s very first time behind a drum kit was his debut performance, playing the beats on the lead song of Parliament’s classic album “Mothership Connection,” demonstrates just how much music is in his blood. The song “P-Funk Wants to Get Funked Up” and Mudbone’s distinguished voice on the hookline (Make My Funk The P-Funk), created the identity for a new musical empire that spawned dozens of platinum albums, all of which featured Mudbone. When George Clinton needed to kick start the P-Funk genre again in the 80’s, he turned to Mudbone’s amazing skills to deliver the classic beat and vocals on the mega hit “Atomic Dog”. That song is not only P-Funk’s biggest hit, but formed the basis of the beginnings of Dr Dre’s West Coast G-Funk, setting new standards for countless rappers and hip hoppers to sample and follow the pioneers.
Never one to rest on his laurels due to his sound business acumen, Mudbone left P-Funk at their height to form his own unit “Sly Fox”. The debut single from Sly Fox (written exclusively by Mudbone) “Let’s Go All The Way,” was a straight up multi million seller, that was so far ahead of its time that even now people not only sample it, but still wonder how those sounds were created in the first place.
As a singer, musician, songwriter, performer, producer and arranger Mudbone has collaborated with many of the worlds leading musicians, including Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Prince, Dave Stewart, Bob Dylan, Bono (U2), Brian May (Queen), Jimmy Cliff, The Ramones, just to name a few.
In 2002, with Nelson Mandela’s personal backing, Mudbone was asked by Dave Stewart (of Eurythmics fame) to co-write “Freedom’s Coming”, a song to raise money for the Nelson Mandela Foundation to fight against HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
Mudbone has also written, produced and performed music for major films, TV series and commercials. In 2002, Mudbone co-wrote the music for the popular French cartoon series “Funky Cops”. His most recent success was writing for and performing on the soundtrack of the Paramount Pictures film “Alfie", starring British Film star Jude Law.
Having toured with the greatest from Stevie Wonder to P!nk, he is now bringing to the world a brand new experience: Mudbone & OffTheChain. An explosive cocktail fusion of Rock, Funk, Blues, Hip Hop and Rap that’s gonna shake the ground from underneath your feet!!
In between touring with former James Brown and Prince band leader, the legendary Maceo Parker, and being the musical director for DJ Lady Kier formerly with Deeelite, Mudbone’s assembled a cast of some dynamically impressive musicians to form his own super group “Mudbone & Off TheChain”.
This incredible unit not only features Mudbone and Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame member Billy “Bass” Nelson (the original bassist/vocalist and founding member of the group Funkadelic) but also some of the freshest talent Mudbone’s encountered during his long and illustrious career.
